When it comes to sexually transmitted infections, African-Americans living in the Pee Dee area of South Carolina are disproportionately impacted. Most of the people living with HIV in the Pee Dee Public Health Region are African-American men (46%), 17% were White men, 28 % were African-American women, and 5% were White women.
USPIE partners with the Boys and Girls Club of the Pee Dee Area (BGCPDA) to teach youth ages 10-19 using the Think Truth Today curriculum. Their mission is “to inspire and enable all children from throughout the Pee Dee area, with special concern for those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens.”
BGCPDA provide young people with a safe place to go after school and during the summer by providing a safe, affordable place for kids and teens during critical out-of-school time. After school hours serve as the essential link between school and home, offering a great opportunity to positively influence the future of youth and communities. Boys and Girls Club seeks to ensure that all kids, especially those who are at greatest risk, have a positive and enriching experience putting them on the path to success.
USPIE recognizes that many adults believe the “safe sex” message is the best we have to offer teens. With research-based training from national experts, targeted adults will understand the social, psychological, and health gains to be realized when teens avoid sexual activity. The USPIE Title V Year II SRA Education Program will influence teens to abstain from sexual activity by first educating and training the influential adults in their lives.
USPIE understands that community and parental involvement is essential to effectively directing teens to abstain from sexual activity. 88% of teens say parental communication would help them to avoid sexual activity (National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, 2003). When more South Carolina parents and other adults understand the influence they have over teen sexual health they will be better prepared and motivated to direct teens toward an abstinent lifestyle.
Youth need to know the truth about the devastating consequences of sexual activity outside of marriage. They need to understand that the failed ideology of the past decades has placed them in very dangerous times and the only thing that will save them from the ill-conceived notion that sex outside of marriage is natural and inevitable is truth about consequences and benefits of abstaining until marriage. Think Truth Today is a unique approach to revealing truths about this issue.
